What to Build, What to Build

From traditional homes to barndominiums to container homes, we are exploring all the possibilities in planning the construction of our new house. And just when I think we've found it, something else pops up. At the moment, I'm somewhat fixated on container homes. Shipping containers, carved out and welded together, to build a low-maintenance, high efficiency, kinda green home. I had heard about them, but hadn't done much research. There is actually a show on HGTV at the moment called Container Homes. And the house that is featured in Episode one is the bomb diggity. This is it...

It is 7.5 x 40 foot containers, four on the first floor, 3.5 on the second, with a walkout basement/garage. 3,000 square feet. Perfect! And the views from the rooftop deck are out of this world. Total cost to build? Under $300k. Sounds too good to be true, so there are still lots of questions. The biggest one remains, how can we get 7.5 shipping containers up our road and onto our property? And will the Architectural Review Board approve our plan?

I have actually spent the morning looking at container home options online. Lots to ponder. Do we really need 3,000 square feet? How do I even get started with the process? I have conveniently routed one leg of our roadtrip through both Mineral Point, Wisconsin, where the HGTV container home is, and through Oshkosh, Wisconsin, where Mods International (the builder) is located. I guess I just need to dive in. Found a bunch more homes online that I like...

Here are the Top 10 Container Homes of 2020...

It just seems to make a lot of economic and environmental sense. And it's different, which somehow ALWAYS appeals to me. I will keep you abreast of our home building journey alongside our travels throughout the US, as well as my spiritual journey. You might just have a hard time following once all three of these explorations are well under way. Ha.
